Notes

A systematic encyclopaedia of shells (marine, freshwater and land) alphabetically arranged and especially concerned with their nomenclature. At the end of each shell description the author analyses the accounts given by other authorities. These include George Rumpf, or Rumphius (1627-1702) and Dezallier D'Argenville (1680-1765), better known as a writer on the layout of gardens, but who also published two works on shells in 1742 and 1757. Christophe Élisabeth Favart d'Herbigny (1725-1793) was a canon of the church of Rheims. A scarce title; COPAC records two UK copies, at the British Library and the Natural History Museum and World Cat notes only a handful of locations worldwide.
