TWO VOLUMES. 4to. 11.5 x 9.25 inches. Volume I, xi + [i] + 305 + [1] pp.; Volume II, xxiv +248 pp. Bound in original cloth, gilt; spines in compartments with gilt titles. Extremities worn and some loss of spine of Vol. I, neatly repaired. A little spotting of preliminaries and some plate margins (Vol. I) and of edges, but otherwise very good clean interiors. Title page inscription to Vol. I of The Library of the Staffordshire General Infirmary from the Council of the College, with signature of Secretary, Illustrated by 36 lithograph plates, a few with additional outline colour, each accompanied by 1 or 2 pages of descriptive letterpress. Decorated by devices on title pages. John Thomas Quekett (1815-61) qualified at the Royal College of Surgeons in 1840 and was secretary of the Microscopical Society of London, 1841-60 which he had co-founded with his brother in 1839. He was appointed assistant conservator at the Hunterian Museum of the RCS in 1841 and Conservator of the Museum and Professor of Histology in 1856. In 1846 the Museum had purchased his collection of 2,500 microscopical preparations and he was directed to prepare a catalogue, which forms the content of these two volumes. He had published A Practical Treatise on the Use of the Microscope, considered to be the first practical guide to microscopy, in 1848. The Quekett Microscopical Club was founded in his memory in 1865 and still exists. A scarce title.
