Three named turnpike trustees resident in Matfield Brenchley, Nettlestead and Yalding, convey the tollhouse at Woodgate Nettlestead (on the junction of roads to East Peckham, Hadlow and Mereworth) to Horace Martin of West Bank in the parish of Wrotham. The trust in question is not given a short name, although F.C. Elliston-Erwood, the Kent authority on turnpike roads, who formerly owned this document, has labelled it the Branbridges Road. It formally cites an act of 1829 'for repairing the road from the Brick Kilns on East Malling Heath to Pembury Green and from Branbridges to the Four Wents near Matfield Green and from the said Road into the Mereworth and Hadlow Road.' Most of these routes had been created as turnpikes in 1766 and the later act would have extended this status. Additionally it seems to have established a short new route from Branbridges to the Tonbridge to Maidstone turnpike (1765), joining it between Hadlow and Mereworth. Erwood has annotated the margin in 1949 to give the map reference of the property on the OS 2 1/2 inch map. When this tollhouse was sold in 1884, the turnpike road system was in marked decline and its disposal by the trust suggests that its was realising the value of its assets, prior to being wound up. The 1878 Directory, confirms the residences of the three trustees and of the purchaser.
