Illustrated by two frontispieces, including engraved title page and portrait and 6 engraved plates, all loosely inserted in text except portrait and initial vignette plate and by vignette at beginning of text. Decorated by title page, head and tailpiece vignettes, by initials and colophon.

Godard D' Aucour (1716-1795) was an author and a tax farmer, a member of a privileged group, who collected taxes and duties on behalf of the king including substantial fees for themselves. The Mémoires Turcs was first published in 1743 in Paris, purporting to be Constantinople and allegedly relating the adventures of a party of Turks, enjoying themselves in Paris. This new edition is preceded by an historical and bibliographical account of the author and his works, by the editor, Octave Uzanne (1851-1931), a famous bibliophile, writer, publisher and journalist, whose research covered eighteenth century a
