Early signature of A. Forrest at top of title. A pamphlet calling for an honourable peace with France and advocating a more conciliatory policy on behalf of the Ministry: 'there is reason to hope that by a seasonable and temperate exposition of the views of the two countries, the foundation might be laid for that state of tranquility which is so greatly the interest of both. Whatever may be the language of Bonaparte, with respect to ships, colonies, and commerce, these are not the objects towards which his views will be directed.' William Roscoe (1753-1831) of Allerton Hall, Liverpool was a historian and patron of the arts. He was briefly involved in politics and sat as MP for Liverpool, 1806-07. His vote for the abolition of the slave trade in the Commons ensured that his term of office as a representative of that slave trading city would be short. Second edition published in January 1808, the same month as the first.
