Handwritten commission on parchment, 13 x 10 inches, folded in eight, with accompanying framed and glazed full transciption and historical notes.
Notes
As stated in the accompanying notes, 'This commission of a lieutenant-colonel in Sir John Douglas' Regiment was granted on May 12th 1640, by the Earl of Northumberland, then Captain-General of the Army and Fleet of Charles I, in whose name and by whose authority he was acting. The 'present expedition' referred to in the document was against the Scots Covenanters who, under Lesley, had crossed the border in considerable force, and occupied some of the important towns in the North, such as Newcastle and Durham'.
The main text was written by a scribe, with a space left for the insertion of the name of the commissioned individual. The name of Sir Mathew Cairn was completed in another hand, and the document signed by the Earl of Northumberland.
