Hm prison holloway's original design, opened in 1852, was overseen by james bunstone bunning, the city of london's architect, who signed the 1854 ground plan, featuring a grand entrance inspired by warwick castle. opened as a mixed-sex prison and made female-only in 1903, it was the largest women's prison in western europe until its closure in 2016. holloway prison housed many infamous figures, including suffragettes (like emmeline pankhurst's daughters), notorious killers such as myra hindley and rose west, britain's last woman executed, ruth ellis, nazi sympathiser diana mosley, and later high-profile inmates like maxine carr and vicky pryce, figures from political activists and murderers to celebrities and spies.
