FIRST EDITION. Oblong 8vo. 8.5 x 9.25 inches. 70 + [2] pp. colophon. Bound in pictorial cloth with black blocks and titles. Extremities worn, fly leaves browned and a few margin stains; otherwise a very good copy. 1894 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated throughout by line drawings, some whole page, by music and by decorative title page and borders to text. Decorated by colophon. Early study of eight children's singing games, finely illustrated in the Arts and Crafts style, by Winifred Green, nee Smith (1871-1940) of the Birmingham School of Art. Alice Bertha Gomme (1852-1938), folkorist and collaborator of Cecil Sharp, was a founder member of the Folklore Society in 1878. She wrote a pioneering study, The Traditional Games of England, Scotland and Ireland (2 vols., 1894, 98), describing some eight hundred children's games.
