Notes
Published anonymously, but known to be the work of Catherine Sinclair (1800-64), novelist and children's writer and fourth daughter of Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster (1754-1835), the famous Scottish agriculturist, who has contributed an introductory epistle commending the book. She was born in Edinburgh and served as her father's secretary from the age of fourteen until his death, after which she became a more prolific writer of novels and travel stories. Her novels, of which the most popular was Holiday House (1839) combine entertaining adventures with a moral message. Charlie Seymour, her first published book, appeared in four editions from 1832 to 1856. This first Edinburgh edition is very scarce and COPAC records only a single copy in UK libraries, in the National Library of Scotland; WorldCat adds only three more, at Trinity College, Hartford and the Pierpoint Morgan Library, New York, in the USA and in Toronto Public Library.
