Notes
Part I of the Population Tables of Great Britain covers England, Wales and Scotland to the level of each individual parish and includes all the figures for the previous censuses of 1801, 1811, 1821, 1831 and 1841 for the purposes of comparison. The notes accompanying these detailed entries comment on reasons for increases in parish populations, e.g. Saltwood, Kent, 1811, 'The population is stated to have been considerably augmented by the number of soldiers' wives and other camp followers in the Parish...' and Rye, Sussex, 'The extended cultivation of hops has caused an increase of population in this and in the adjoining Parishes, 1841-51.' All the results are analysed in the Appendix and Summary Tables at the beginning of Vol. I and a detailed index to parishes, township and indexes concludes Vol. II. The set was owned by two families of bankers, both called Smith and both sending Tory MP's to the Commons. The Abel Smith family, with many successive generations bearing the same name had owned Woodhall Park, Herts since 1801 and the set could have been owned by Abel Smith (1788-1859) or by Abel Smith (1829-98). The card records the name, Samuel George Smith (1822-1900), of Ware, another Hertfordshire banker and Tory MP. A very scarce title in the original edition.
