Notes

Well illustrated guide to the city and cathedral by the Rev. Thomas Field (1855-1936) and the Rev. Charles Francis Routledge. According to Goulden, Edward Crow (1849-1908) reissued some guides based on the well established publications of Henry James Goulden, but by about 1890 the copyright had returned to the Goulden establishment. Crow then appears to have commissioned several authors to write some new titles to appear under his imprint, including the Handy Guide of 1893 and this undated guide, which also appeared in a (possibly earlier) format of eighty eight pages. The British Library dates this hundred page edition to about 1900. The only internal indication as to date is a reference to the S.E.R. station; this company and the L.C.D.R. formed a working union, the South Eastern and Chatham Railway, in 1899, although the old company name may have remained in common usage in referring to the station for some time afterwards.
