Large 8vo. 9.75 x 7.25 inches. xx + 300 pp. Title page in red and black. Bound in original green cloth, gilt; spine with contrasting red morocco title label, gilt. Some edge wear, damp staining of boards and edge darkening. Foxing of flyleaves, but otherwise a very good copy. Pictorial bookplate of Joseph and Edith Freeman of Crockham Hill. Illustrated by 35 colour plates by author, including frontispiece, those in text accompanied by descriptive letterpress. Study of the British lepidoptera, notable for the author's colour illustrations. Frederick Edward Hulme (1841-1909) was an amateur botanist and drawing teacher, appointed Professor of Freehand and Geometrical Drawing at King's College, London in 1886. He was best known for his nine volume work, Familiar Wild Flowers.
