8vo. 7.75 x 5.5 inches. [vi] + viii + 478 pp. + [2] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in faux vellum, with red and black titles and facsimile signature and ribbon with gilt titles looped through the vellum. Top edge gilt, other edges deckled. Extremities a little worn with small stains, ribbon frayed at one end with detached and missing fore edge ties. Edges and pages browned and with scattered foxing, especially of flyleaves. Signed by author below limited edition statement. 1887 gift inscription on second free endpaper. Illustrated by engraved title with a border designed by Bartolozzi, 1763 and by 4 plates, including one in colour and 2 folding facsimiles. A study of the life and output of the prolific Italian engraver, Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815), who worked in London for forty years before moving to Lisbon, with financial details of London art sales and the value of Bartolozzi's prints, etc. Chapters also cover the subject of print collecting. Andrew White Tuer (1838-1900), was a writer publisher, printer and collector. The stationery business of Field and Tuer was transformed into the Leadenhall Press in 1868 and Tuer founded the Paper and Printing Trades Journal in 1872. His most significant title was The History of the Hornbook (editions 1896 and 97), a work on the subject which has never been superseded.
