Notes

An interesting snapshot of life in the north Kent marshes as it was a hundred years ago, slightly disguised as fiction. The manners and customs of the marshmen are well described and even the dialect is recorded. The tale centres around Milton Regis, or Marshton as it is called here. A Son of the Marshes is a pseudonym for Denham Jordan, and the work was a joint production by him and the editor, Jean Allan Owen (1841-1922) who was a prolific natural history writer, he edited several other books by Denham. First published in 1891, this second edition is without plates.
