An Act from the sixth session of the thirteenth Parliament of George III, begun, 1768 and continued to 1772. The Act provides for named Commissioners to effect the improvement of the main streets of Gravesend, including their paving, cleansing, lighting and drainage and the removal of 'all Incroachments, Annoyances, Obstructions, and Nuisances.' To meet the expense a rate is to be raised from the occupiers and the statute duty of labour towards the repair of highways is the means of providing labour. Special provision is made for the regulation of signboards and the hooping of casks, repairing of wheels, shoeing of horses, lime and mortar making, lighting of bonfires, throwing of fireworks and selling of goods are all forbidden from taking place on the streets, with offenders to be fined.
