Henri-Frédéric Amiel (1821-81) was a Swiss moral philosopher and poet of Huguenot descent, who was appointed as a professor of Moral Philosophy at the academy of Geneva. Political differences with the dominant aristocratic party helped lead to a feeling of alienation which inspired him to write his Journal Intime. It was not published until 1884 when it soon gained a wide reputation and was translated and first appeared in two volumes in 1885, by Mary Augusta Ward (née Arnold, 1851-1920), novelist and anti-suffrage campaigner, who wrote under her married name of Mrs Humphrey Ward. Her introduction provides a biographical account of Amiel and of his character as revealed by the diary. This is a reprint of the second edition first published in 1889.
