Notes
François Levaillant (1753-1814) was a French explorer and naturalist, born in Paramaribo (Surinam) into a family from Metz. Sponsored by the Dutch East India Company he travelled to their colony of the Cape and made several journeys into the interior of southern Africa, collecting many specimens which were sent to Leiden. He published two accounts of his journeys in Voyage dans l' intérieur de l'Afrique (2 vols. 1790) and Second voyage...(3 vols. 1796). This edition is abridged from the complete work. It includes a brief account of the beautiful native girl, Narina: 'elle avait la figure charmante et les plus fraîches et les plus belles dents du monde.'
