8vo. 9 x 5.25 inches. xii + 97 pp. Bound in original navy cloth, gilt, in unclipped dust wrapper. Minor wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy. Bookplate. Illustrated by 8 plates numbered in text and by text figures. Facsimile reprint of the 1840 Second Edition of the naval Battle of St. Vincent fought between the French and Spanish fleets in 1797 off the coast of Portugal. By Colonel John Drinkwater Bethune (1762-1844). He served in the Mediterranean as an army officer, including the Great Siege of Gibraltar, the subject of his first book. He was returning to England on board the frigate, HMS Minerve, flying the flag of Commodore Horatio Nelson, when the Spanish fleet was sighted. Nelson later returned to his vessel, HMS Captain in the British fleet to play a leading role in the defeat of the Spanish. Drinkwater as an eyewitness to the battle wrote the first edition of the Narrative (1797) to emphasise the role of his friend, Nelson, considering that this was inadequately reported in official dispatches of the action.
